Prafulla Dahanukar is one of the most woman senior artists of India. Born in Goa, she completed 50 years of her career as an artist in 2007. The most prestigious art gallery in Mumbai the Jehangir Art Gallery sponsored an exhibition which was a Retrospective show of her paintings through the 50 years. She has come a long way from the time she won the Gold Medal for the best work of the year in 1955 from the J. J. School of Art.

 

Prafulla paints oil on canvas. She has held individual shows regularly since 1956, and won a Silver Medal at the Bombay Art Society Portrait Exhibition. The Government of France awarded her a scholarship for the study of graphic art at Ecole de Beaux Arts and Atelier 17 in Paris. While in Paris she held an exhibition of her paintings in 1961 and has since then participated in international exhibitions in England, Hungary, Switzerland, Germany, Australia, Japan, Portugal, Iceland and France. She has exhibited solo 3 times in London, the first of which was sponsored by the High Commission of India and the latest one was in 2006 in Ardean Gallery in Cork Street. In India she has had several individual shows in Mumbai, Delhi, Calcutta, and Chennai.

 

Prafulla's paintings have been found in auctions held by Christies, Sothebys, and Osean. Her paintings are in collection of Museums, Corporations, Banks, Hotels and private collection all over the World. She has also gained recognition for her murals, particularly those in ceramic, wood, fibreglass and glass, which highlight many prominent buildings in Mumbai.

 

Prafulla has worked for the art movement in India. She was a committee member of the Lalit Kala Akademi, New Delhi, from 1974‑79, and the President of Bombay Art Society for 6 years.  For last 30 years she has been on the committee of Kala Akademi Goa, and at present is the  President of the Art Society of India and the Chairperson of the Artists' Centre, Mumbai.

 

She has gained recognition for not only her mastery of colour in her oil paintings, but also for her murals, particularly those in ceramic, wood, fibreglass and glass, which highlight many prominent buildings in Mumbai.

 

In addition to the visual arts, Prafulla is keenly interested in Indian classical music and theatre. Prafulla has two daughters, very much interested in arts like mother.
